Operation Safe Driver Week

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s annual “Operation Safe Driver Week” begins this week of October 15-21, 2017.

The goal is to improve the driving behavior of all drivers – whether operating a commercial or passenger vehicle.  As always, avoid the following dangerous driving behaviors: speeding, distracted driving, texting, failure to use a seat belt, traveling too closely, improper lane changes and failure to obey traffic lights.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), unsafe driving continues to be the leading cause of crashes: 88 percent of large truck crashes and 93 percent of passenger vehicle crashes are due to the kind of dangerous driving behaviors targeted during Operation Safe Driver Week.

National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, Thank You BCOs!

We appreciate professional truck drivers all year, but during this year’s National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, from September 10-16, we’d like to show our gratitude to Landstar owner-operators by providing a free lunch.

Landstar business capacity owners (BCOs) – our term for independent truck owner-operators – are invited to visit any of Landstar’s orientation centers Monday, September 11 through Friday, September 15. The free lunch will be served at noon in each of these orientation centers: Fort Worth, TX, Jefferson, GA, Indianapolis, IN, Lewistown, PA, Sparks, NV, Rockford, IL and Burlington, ON.

Due to Hurricane Irma, the St. Augustine, FL orientation center will be closed Monday, September 11 and possibly Tuesday, September 12. To find out Tuesday if the St. Augustine center will be open and serving lunch, please call 800-872-8557 prior to arrival.

Landstar BCOs play an important role in transporting goods safely and on time the whole year through – so we’re spending National Truck Driver Appreciation Week paying tribute to the men and women who haul freight safely day in and day out.

Throughout the week we are featuring Landstar’s finest on Facebook and Twitter.  Follow our pages and stay tuned for some fun posts to share, and prizes to win! Be sure to follow the hashtags #ThankYouBCOs and #NTDAW2017 to be part of the National Truck Driver Appreciation Week conversation.

Coming Soon: Three Steps to Book a Load

Landstar’s brand new Available Loads app is coming soon to Android and iPhone. The mobile app is designed to give business capacity owners — Landstar’s term for independent truck owner-operators — a better, easier way to find and book loads.

The free mobile app was designed for the needs of BCOs and was first announced during Landstar’s All-Star Celebration in Nashville, Tennessee in July. That same month, the app was put to the test and tweaked to fully support Landstar owner-operators’ needs.

Soon, booking a shipment will easily be done in three steps:

  1. Login using your name and password from LandstarOnline.com
  2. Easily set your load parameters and search loads
  3. Simply tap to call the agent and book your load

“We went through multiple designs and gathered feedback on the app’s functionality from Landstar BCOs throughout the process. Our goal was to refine the app to do what owner-operators expect it to do with ease,” said Landstar Executive Vice President of Capacity Development Rocco Davanzo.

The new Available Loads app is intuitive and has the same features and loads that can be found on LandstarOnline.com. With a simple download, the app will give BCOs an easy-to-navigate load board right on their phones.

“BCOs won’t see fewer loads than they would see on the load board or miss anything when they shift from the web version to the mobile app,” explained Davanzo.

Penrod with the keys to his new truck!

The random drawing and giveaway was the highlight of the 6th Annual Landstar BCO All-Star Celebration held July 6 – 8 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

The giveaway truck, a red pearl 2017 Western Star 5700XE, was exclusively reserved for a Landstar Million Mile Safe Driver or Landstar Roadstar, the company’s highest honor for business capacity owners (BCOs). BCO is Landstar’s term for the independent owner-operators who provide the company with transportation capacity under exclusive lease arrangements.

Landstar is very proud of the safety-first professionals who make up Landstar’s unique system of independent owner-operators, sales agents and customers,” said Landstar President and CEO Jim Gattoni. “We’re pleased to have the contributing support of companies like Western Star and Comdata as Landstar rewards positive driver behavior with a chance to win such a grand prize.”

The winner, Dickie Penrod of Fayetteville, North Carolina was one of eight semi-finalists drawn by random computerized name generators. Penrod leased on to Landstar in 1999 and was named a One Million Mile Safe Driver in 2008.

“Landstar is a valued partner of Western Star Trucks and we are excited to support them in their quest of driver safety,” said Western Star Trucks’ On-Highway Marketing Manager Mike Guarino.

“It is an honor to help an owner-operator. Watching his reaction when he won the truck is extra special and rewarding. We love the partnership and ability to continue to bring value-added solutions to Landstar and its BCO and agent base,” said Comdata Chief Operations Officer Randy Morgan.
