The free lunch will be served at noon in each of these orientation centers: Fort Worth, TX, Jefferson, GA, Indianapolis, IN, Lewistown, PA, Sparks, NV, Rockford, IL and Burlington, ON.

Due to Hurricane Irma, the St. Augustine, FL orientation center will be closed Monday, September 11 and possibly Tuesday, September 12. To find out Tuesday if the St. Augustine center will be open and serving lunch, please call 800-872-8557 prior to arrival.

Coming Soon: Three Steps to Book a Load

Landstar’s brand new Available Loads app is coming soon to Android and iPhone. The mobile app is designed to give business capacity owners — Landstar’s term for independent truck owner-operators — a better, easier way to find and book loads.

The free mobile app was designed for the needs of BCOs and was first announced during Landstar’s All-Star Celebration in Nashville, Tennessee in July. That same month, the app was put to the test and tweaked to fully support Landstar owner-operators’ needs.

Soon, booking a shipment will easily be done in three steps:

  1. Login using your name and password from LandstarOnline.com
  2. Easily set your load parameters and search loads
  3. Simply tap to call the agent and book your load

“We went through multiple designs and gathered feedback on the app’s functionality from Landstar BCOs throughout the process. Our goal was to refine the app to do what owner-operators expect it to do with ease,” said Landstar Executive Vice President of Capacity Development Rocco Davanzo.

The new Available Loads app is intuitive and has the same features and loads that can be found on LandstarOnline.com. With a simple download, the app will give BCOs an easy-to-navigate load board right on their phones.

“BCOs won’t see fewer loads than they would see on the load board or miss anything when they shift from the web version to the mobile app,” explained Davanzo.

LANDSTAR NAMED AMONG TOP 20 FLEETS TO DRIVE FOR

For the sixth consecutive year, Landstar is among the “Top 20 Fleets to Drive For” according to the latest survey conducted by Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) and CarriersEdge.

The nomination process began in 2016, with transportation companies evaluated in a variety of categories including professional development opportunities, career path/advancement opportunities, annual turnover rates and fleet safety record.

TCA and CarriersEdge interviewed each nominee’s representatives and executives about their company’s direction, policies and programs. Those comments were compared to a selection of each fleet’s drivers or owner-operators surveyed and then incorporated into the fleet’s final score.

“We are proud that the owner-operators leased to Landstar feel they have freedom, opportunity and the support services they need to successfully run their own businesses,” said Landstar Executive Vice President of Capacity Development Rocco Davanzo. “We appreciate all that Landstar owner-operators do to provide customers with excellence in safety and service, helping to make Landstar an industry leader.”

This is the ninth year of the survey which is open to all U.S. and Canadian fleets that operate 10 or more trucks. To be considered, fleets must be nominated by either a company driver or an owner-operator.

According to the TCA, phase two of the evaluation will divide the highest scoring fleets into small and large categories, from which two overall winners will be selected. The overall winners will be announced during TCA’s Annual Convention, March 26-29, 2017 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Safety Thursday: Winter Driving Safety Tips

4507_winter-truck

Driving in winter weather means cold, wet and sometimes freezing road conditions. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), taking proper, preventative safety measures on the roads during the winter keeps professional drivers safe, as well as other vehicles on the road.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recommends these tips to professional drivers to stay safe on the roads this winter:

  • Reduce your driving speed in bad weather conditions. Adjusting speed to match weather and road conditions is imperative helps decrease the risk for fatal crashes.
  • Reduce speed when turning and before entering an exit or entrance ramp. A large percentage of crashes happen when large trucks or buses are making a turn or traveling on a curved ramp. Reducing speed helps drivers maintain control of their trucks.
  • Drive slowly with a loaded trailer. Large trucks with fully loaded trailers are 10 times more likely to roll over than those with empty trailers.

While traveling this winter, the National Safety Council recommends drivers always:

  • Prepare your truck for winter. Do a pre-trip inspection and be sure to check your truck’s brakes, wiring, hoses and fan belts, spark plugs, batteries, tire wear and pressure, antifreeze level and freeze lines.
  • Have emergency supplies in their trucks. It is recommended that drivers ride with a shovel, tire chains, tool kits, first aid kits, blankets, matches, scrapers, triangles, flares, a flashlight and extra batteries.

Download the Landstar Connect App Today!

4590_landstar-connect

Download Landstar Connect today to experience the app’s new features – less work for app users and more visibility for customers. With the latest enhancements to the shipment tracking app, BCOs and other approved carriers using Landstar Connect no longer have to make check calls. Instead, the app automatically updates a BCO’s arrivals and departures via smart phone, so there’s no lag time for agents and their customers who need to know exactly where their freight is and when it’s been received.

“The auto arrive and departure enhancements save us from having to make multiple calls to get current locations, loaded times and empty times,” says Landstar DUV Agency’s Misty Plata.

Besides the time-saving benefits to agents and capacity providers, the more extensive GPS load-tracking capabilities also help meet customer demand for timely, accurate status updates about their shipments.

“Landstar Connect is a great way for us to quickly provide the customer with detailed, real-time status updates,” said CAN Agency’s Steve Linsalata.

Other recent app enhancements include:

  • GeoFence Lock and Unlock: An owner-operator can activate the GeoFence around his or her trailer while under a load using the app – an alert is sent if the fence is broken.
  • Store and Forward: When the device is in a poor service area, Landstar Connect stores the GPS location and forwards it to the customer when service is regained.
  • Document Scanning Services: Capacity providers can upload paperwork to Landstar using the app.
