The Great American Trucking Show (GATS) was a huge success in Dallas, Texas, this year – especially for Landstar BCOs. The three day event took place in the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center at the end of August and was packed full of entertainment and industry information, with the big focus on the health and wellness of drivers. Landstar’s “Fit for the Road Health and Wellness Pavilion” was among the highlights of the event, with speakers, educational demonstrations and the Landstar Fit for the Road Jeopardy game. In an effort to promote driver health and wellness, the pavilion was packed with cooking and exercise demonstrations, information about exercising on the road, as well as a wide range of free screenings for all CDL holders who were in attendance.
CDL holders received blood pressure screenings, cardiovascular risk assessments, chiropractic nerve assessments, diabetes and nutrition education, eye exams, blood glucose measurements, BMI and kidney screenings. And for the first time ever, thanks to the fundraising efforts of The Trucking Solutions Group, CDL holders without insurance were able to have a free mammography screening during GATS. Landstar BCOs and management also participated in the first ever Fit for the Road 5K Run and Walk. The 5K gun blew at 7 a.m. on the last day of the show, and despite some rainy weather, folks laced up their shoes and hit the pavement for 3.1 soggy miles.
Landstar kicked off each day at GATS with breakfast and safety meetings for Landstar BCOs and their families who were in attendance. Dozens of BCOs and their families joined the daily safety meetings, where Landstar management spoke about pending and new regulations, hazmat procedures, safety numbers, cargo loss prevention and the 2016 BCO Appreciation Days happening in both Rockford, Illinois and Fort Worth, Texas. Among the many highlights of GATS was the annual Pride and Polish Competition where two Landstar Team Drivers took home medals in the “Working Expediter” category of the truck beauty competition.
Landstar BCOs Lynn and Shelly Baxter received first place with their 2006 Freightliner straight truck and BCOs Bob and Linda Caffee came in second for their 2015 Freightliner straight truck. The Great American Trucking Show will return to Dallas August 25-27, 2016.
