Operation Safe Driver Week

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s annual “Operation Safe Driver Week” begins this week of October 15-21, 2017.

The goal is to improve the driving behavior of all drivers – whether operating a commercial or passenger vehicle.  As always, avoid the following dangerous driving behaviors: speeding, distracted driving, texting, failure to use a seat belt, traveling too closely, improper lane changes and failure to obey traffic lights.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), unsafe driving continues to be the leading cause of crashes: 88 percent of large truck crashes and 93 percent of passenger vehicle crashes are due to the kind of dangerous driving behaviors targeted during Operation Safe Driver Week.

The Roadstar Distinction

The Roadstar distinction is awarded to Landstar owner-operators recognized for their outstanding safety records and professionalism behind the wheel.

Roadstar award winners are considered to be the most elite of the company’s business capacity owners (BCOs) – Landstar’s term for independent owner-operators leased exclusively to Landstar.

Typically, it will take a Landstar BCO 10 years or more to earn the coveted Roadstar award.

Each Roadstar recipient is productive, profitable and exceptional in all aspects of operating his or her own business.

To be eligible for the honor, a Roadstar nominee must:

  • Have earned status as a one or more Landstar Million Mile Safe Driver
  • Provide an example to other truck operators in adherence to DOT regulations and Landstar’s safety-first culture
  • Produce significant revenue
  • Have a positive, cooperative attitude in his or her interactions with employees, agents and customers

Load Securement Crucial to Safety

The Federal Motor Carriers’ Compliance Safety Accountability (CSA) program carries severe penalties for cargo securement. Load securement violations can be simple to identify and a driver’s ability to recognize them is crucial to road safety.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) 30th annual International Roadcheck will take place June 6-8, 2017, which will focus on cargo securement.  During this year’s blitz, inspectors will be conducting the North American Standard Level I Inspection, which is the most thorough roadside inspection.  Specific details are important when it comes to load securement, like knowing the dunnage must be tied down with a strap or chain and that a bungee cord cannot be used.

Good load securement is critical, not only because law enforcement will be keeping a close watch, but because the public is vulnerable if a load is improperly secured.  Improper securement is not safe and can cause road hazards as well as damage to freight.  Operators must fully understand the cargo securement criteria listed in the federal motor safety regulations.

Landstar offers securement training in the classroom as well as online courses on securement.  Contact Landstar’s Cargo Securement Advisor, Pete Hitzemann in the Orientations Centers department for more information 800-847-8464.

LANDSTAR NAMED AMONG TOP 20 FLEETS TO DRIVE FOR

For the sixth consecutive year, Landstar is among the “Top 20 Fleets to Drive For” according to the latest survey conducted by Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) and CarriersEdge.

The nomination process began in 2016, with transportation companies evaluated in a variety of categories including professional development opportunities, career path/advancement opportunities, annual turnover rates and fleet safety record.

TCA and CarriersEdge interviewed each nominee’s representatives and executives about their company’s direction, policies and programs. Those comments were compared to a selection of each fleet’s drivers or owner-operators surveyed and then incorporated into the fleet’s final score.

“We are proud that the owner-operators leased to Landstar feel they have freedom, opportunity and the support services they need to successfully run their own businesses,” said Landstar Executive Vice President of Capacity Development Rocco Davanzo. “We appreciate all that Landstar owner-operators do to provide customers with excellence in safety and service, helping to make Landstar an industry leader.”

This is the ninth year of the survey which is open to all U.S. and Canadian fleets that operate 10 or more trucks. To be considered, fleets must be nominated by either a company driver or an owner-operator.

According to the TCA, phase two of the evaluation will divide the highest scoring fleets into small and large categories, from which two overall winners will be selected. The overall winners will be announced during TCA’s Annual Convention, March 26-29, 2017 in Nashville, Tennessee.
