Landstar’s First Truck Winner of 2017

Landstar BCO Ralph Hall wins brand new Peterbilt 579

Landstar BCO Ralph Hall wins brand new Peterbilt 579

Landstar announces the winner of its Landstar Deliver to Win Truck Giveaway, the first of two new trucks to be given away in 2017. Landstar business capacity owners (BCO), the company’s term for independent truck owner-operators, are eligible to earn entries to win throughout the year.

Landstar BCO Ralph Hall is driving a brand new Peterbilt 579 after winning the semi-truck in a random drawing held Jan. 26 in Jacksonville, Fla. The truck giveaway was the highlight of Landstar’s annual BCO Appreciation Days, a two-day event held to thank the independent owner-operators leased to Landstar for providing excellence in safety and customer service.

Hall was one of five finalists randomly selected from the 170,000 entries.

“I drove it home and I’m still in disbelief. Nothing like this has ever happened to me,” said Hall. The Tennessee resident was also surprised that his 5-year-old grandson’s prediction came to pass. “Trenton said he saw ‘Papa Ralph’ winning a big red truck,” Hall says, explaining that neither he nor the child knew the color of the giveaway truck, which is Pierce Red, before the event.

Landstar President and CEO Jim Gattoni hosted the Landstar Deliver to Win Truck Giveaway, along with representatives from sponsor Comdata.

“It is an honor to award BCOs like Ralph Hall with a brand new truck that can significantly and positively impact their lives,” said Landstar President and CEO Jim Gattoni. “These truck owner-operators are hardworking small businesspeople who are committed to our safety-first culture and provide excellent customer service each day.”

The second truck giveaway of 2017 will be in July during Landstar BCO All-Star Celebration, an annual event held exclusively to honor Landstar Million Mile Safe Drivers and Landstar Roadstars, the company’s highest honor for BCOs.

BCO Appreciation Days 2017 Truck Giveaway

One lucky Landstar business capacity owner 2017-Truck-Giveaway(BCO) will drive home from the 2017 Landstar BCO Appreciation Days in Jacksonville, Florida in a brand new 2017 Peterbilt 579. The pierce candy red Peterbilt 579 features a 455-HP PACCAR MX-13 engine 10 speed Eaton Fuller transmission.

According to Peterbilt, the 2017 version of the 579 was built with maximum driver comfort in mind. Compared to previous years’ models, the cab is wider and provides 8 more inches of room between seats and an additional 2.9 inches in depth. Also, a 45 percent increase in glass, provides owner-operators with best-in-class visibility.

The 2017 model truck was designed with a new dash and sleeper. The 579’s spacious titanium colored interior provides an 80 inch high roof sleeper, a premium pocket spring mattress, and a rear wall storage cabinet. According to Peterbilt, the ergonomic dash was crafted for driver efficiency, increased visibility and improved driver comfort. The truck’s new sound abatement technology minimizes outside noise, giving owner-operators a more peaceful ride.

Equipped with an enhanced fuel efficiency package, the 579 takes fuel savings to new levels. Complete with aerodynamic styling, optimized powertrain, low rolling resistance tires and SmartTire Pressure Monitoring System, the 579 increases owner-operators’ bottom line with a 14 percent improvement in fuel efficiency over previous models, according to Peterbilt.

The Landstar Deliver to Win truck giveaway, powered by Comdata, will be held on the first night of the two-day event in Jacksonville this year, January 26-27. Landstar BCO Appreciation Days are held each year to thank BCOs for their service and dedication to safety.

Safety Thursday: Safe Backing, Get Out And Look

4564_goal

Even under the best circumstances, backing a commercial motor vehicle is not risk-free because, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, tractor-trailers have limited visibility and large blind spots. Before backing up, Landstar, along with the National Safety Council, urges drivers to practice the G.O.A.L. method – “Get Out And Look.”

“Landstar encourages business capacity owners (BCOs) to practice the G.O.A.L. method before backing up. Get Out And Look is an extra step to ensure the driver has sufficient space to back safely,” explains Landstar Vice President of Loss Prevention Shelly Seaton.

According to the National Safety Council, backing crashes are common with larger vehicles, but can be prevented when drivers get out of their trucks and look for potential obstacles in their paths prior to backing their rigs.

The Safety Council offers these guidelines to help prevent backing collisions:

  • Avoid backing whenever possible by parking in spaces you can pull-through.
  • Know your vehicle’s blind spots and remember mirrors do not show the whole picture.
  • Be aware that steep inclines add to the difficulty of seeing behind vehicles.
  • Use a spotter, someone who can guide you and ward off any pedestrians or other vehicles until you have pulled away.
  • Honk to warn anyone in the area that you are going to begin backing up.
  • Think and plan in advance, try to avoid putting yourself in unnecessary backing situations.
